My Good Deed

On my way home around 6:15pm [ dark this time of year ] from the video store ( rented “Kid & I” ) and Chipotle ( got “Chips & Salsa Only” ) I was just about to make a left turn from Fairview Road into my community and I spot something in the fast lane in the opposite direction. As I reached the turn lane I can see that it is a crumpled person in the street.

I see a Cadillac with it’s hazards on in the Monticello exit lane across the street. I turned partially began my turn and stopped my truck halfway into the fast lane and put my hazards on and jumped out of the truck. I I went over to the person and saw that it was a woman crouched over in a seated position with her back to on coming traffic. I asked her if she was okay, I couldn’t understand her. I asked if someone had hit her. Again I didn’t understand exactly what she said, but I didn’t think that she had been hit by a car. She didn’t appear to be in pain or have any injuries however it was dark. I then hear a women standing by the Cadillac yell that she had called for emergency help, I then realized it was my neighbor Eileen.

The women continued speaking in a disoriented way, “where is this, where am I, something about having cancer, I’ve got to go” and so on. Then she started to try to get up and reached up to me. I grabbed her hand and helped her stand, then she bent over and picked up her shoes and purse. [ she was well dressed in a shirt blouse and blazer with a pearl necklace ] She then made a lunge for the side of the street completely disregarding her surroundings. I grabbed her and pulled her back and held on to her while waiting for a break in the traffic so I could get her out of the middle of the street. While I held on to her she tried to bolt in the other direction as well. During the waiting Eileen yelled if I needed any help, I said, “no , just if the cars would stop.” Finally it was safe and I started to walk her toward the bus bench outside Monticello. By this time a young Asian man had stopped and asked if I needed any help, I said no, but then her legs went out and I had to try to hold her up while getting out of the street. I yell okay now you can help to the man. He ran over and grabbed her other arm. She steadied a bit and we made our way toward the bench. Then her legs went completely out and I could only gently control her decent to the bike lane. At this point the other man motioned we carry her.. I had a bad angle and he ended up with her in his arms, I took some of the weight off but he had her. Finally she was seated on the bench. Eileen was right there. The man asked if we needed anything else, I asked him to watch her while I got my truck out of the middle of the street. Once I’d parked my truck he went on his way. Eileen was asking her questions and the woman was asking questions. She said something about have cancer and was coming from the hospital after a treatment. She wanted to know where she was, what city. Eileen told her, she said something about getting home and about Baker Street. She said she took Xanex and lithium. [ I smelled alcohol on her breath ] She kept saying she was okay you go home to your wife. Eileen when briefly to move her car. The woman said her name which being me I didn’t get and I offered her my name. She then asked me if I was Jew also. I said no. Eileen came back and made a comment about where was emergency services, after all they are just across the street from Monticello on the back side.

Then a bus pulled up I didn’t take my eyes off of the woman and was waving behind me for the bus to continue but he was dropping people off. Then a bus pulled up to the stop directly across the street, the woman spotted it and jumped up and was about to dash into traffic. I again blocked her grabbed on and set her back down on the bench. We told her to just stay put help is coming. Finally a squad car showed up. Quickly followed by a second car. The first officer was surveying her with a flash light and asked the second if we needed the medics. The first said yes lets them have a look. He then said to us about him having dealt with her earlier today. We were excused without any questions. So I went home.

You Tube

Well I got me a You Tube account. Here’s my first submission my debut production from 2000. Guss Dussin’s 76th birthday cake.

1000th Mattress

After much waiting for my 999th street mattress to post to streetmattress.com I finally got to submit my 1000th mattress. I’ve been waiting to insure that my 1000th would indeed be my 1000th. Streetmattress.com is running way behind in posting submissions so it might be around Christmas before it is actually posted, but you don’t have to wait here it is:
