The 13th Warrior

A lighthearted Viking tale, if beheading can be lighthearted. Not bad if you like the genre, just not a nail biting adventure. Braveheart it is not.

101 ° F

Holy Hot Foot Batman – When I left work around 2pm I was thinking gee it is kind of warm 82° maybe and that was it. I stopped by Home Depot by the house and stepped out into an oven. I could not believe how hot it was. I just couldn’t understand it. There was no way it could be this hot, but it was. A mere 20 degrees above the forecast.

The Stepford Wives

This is a fun little ditty with good cast. I’d watch it again but won’t be making room for it on the old shelf.

Nero

If you can get by the liberties taken with history it wasn’t half bad. The sets certainly got you in a Roman mood, despite the painfully faux marble walls. In general it was interesting enough to keep my attention even though it was over three hours long, no battles, little bloodshed and no sex.

Lords of Dogtown

Having recently seen Dogtown and Z Boys the documentary this movie was based on, things were very familiar. Knowing the outcome before hand was a bit strange as new pieces to the puzzle were revealed. The movie is less about skateboarding and more about the group of boys that became “modern skateboarding” and how they dealt with “growing up”. Watch Dogtown and Z Boys first if you’re into skateboarding, skip straight to Lords of Dogtown if you want a coming of age story of an alternate lifestyle.
I was disappointed at the lack of Street Mattresses in Dogtown and Z Boys, however Lords of Dogtown did not disappoint.

Spy Kids

A family friendly affair. I was a bit disappointed, I think my hopes were too high from some of reviews I’d heard. It is a good kid movie, I was just hoping it was a good Movie. There are some bizarre elements in it add to that having just seenn Shark Boy and Lava Girl I wonder just how soundly Robert Rodriguez sleeps at night with what his nightmares must be like.

Dan the Burglar

Went back to work tonight to put a second coat on the floor. I was dealing with a DNS issue with my computer so I was late in leaving the house, by the time I reached the restaurant it was all locked up for the night. It was lightly raining with a pretty good thunder and lightning show for these parts. Just as I reached the backdoor Juanito walked up behind me and asked if we had changed the key to the backdoor. He had come to do his janitorial duties and couldn’t get the door open. I said no and tried my key. It would barely budge. I pushed and pulled on the door trying to loosen up the latch. I was finally able to force my key to turn, but it just bent the tailpiece instead of releasing the latch. At this point I remembered that the bread deliveryman had knocked the inside latch loose earlier in the day. I didn’t check the lock after I reattached the pushbar.

At this point we are locked out of the building. Luckily I know how to break in to the building without damage as I had to do this many years ago. I just need tools which I didn’t have with me. I asked Juanito if he had any tools in his truck the only thing he had was a lug nut wrench, which I also had but didn’t think of. It wasn’t the ideal tool for the job, but I figured it could work. Work it did. I was inside in under five minutes and quickly ran to turn off the alarm.

Another twenty minutes of work and I had the backdoor functioning again. The backdoor was supposed to be replaced six months ago but our contractor is a flake. Hopefully we’ll get a new door from our new contractor in short order as the door is not getting any better. I half expect to see raccoons roaming the restaurant some morning from the ever widening gap at the bottom of the rusted doors.

On the way home I swung by a Street Mattress my mother had alerted me to. I took the photo and then tried to get one with a lightning strike in the background. Well this isn’t Kansas so after a few minutes of no double strikes in my zone I gave up and came home. Now that I was wide awake I proceeded to trouble shoot my Internet connection and finally got to bed around 3 AM. To add insult to my sleep deprived injury I had to get up at 7 AM, because the water will be turned off at 8 to the community to repair another mainline leak.

Racing Stripes

A delightful family friendly affair, just some crude insect humor. I think I want a Zebra for Christmas.

Sahara

After last nights movies Sahara was a breath of fresh air. I’d say its an Indy type family action adventure, but it’s no Indiana Jones. It was an enjoyable adventure, it just didn’t seem to reach that critical mass required for that edge of your seat adventure. Well worth the rental and would definitely watch again but I won’t be making room on the shelf for this one unless it was a gift. Yes, even though Penelope Cruz ( a member of the otter family) is in it she is only a mere mortal really cute chick, not that etherial creature she can be.

Sharkboy and Lava Girl, Sub Zero

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl was just plain bizarre in it’s imagery, the 3D was interesting for a while, but I wasn’t exactly ducking out of the way. Maybe if I was a kid?

Sub Zero was your basic B-movie adventure worth the time investment once but you wouldn’t be pulling it off the shelf a second time, unless maybe you’re climber but maybe you’d be more inclined to not if you climb.

The Last Shot

While inspired by true events, this is no ” Catch Me If You Can ” but it does have it’s moments. More smirking than sidesplitting, the funniest was a clip, during the credits, of Matthew Broderick’s new girlfriend. Maybe it works better for those in the biz. Definitely worth a rent, but I won’t be making any shelf space for this one.
I always have guilty feelings about watching a new movie with Alec “Mental Giant” Baldwin, but not any more. While walking home from the rental store it occurred to me that the film represents the livelihood for the many people on the crew, some of which I’m sure are proud flag waving Americans who can think for themselves and don’t rely on CNN for their opinions. Mr. Baldwin is a good actor. Luckily he pursued acting where he is harmless instead of becoming a lawyer where he might have actually had some influence.

Apologies

I just checked the site using Firefox and boy oh boy is it a mess. I guess I really should get in there a build my own layout instead of scotch taping stuff to the stock code. It’s never a good idea when using a CSS that you haven’t bothered to figure out just what it is doing. So until then get out your dewormer and use IE to see this site in a more pleasing light. Oh and I just started using Google’s spell checker and it seems to work like a charm, so my spelling errors should be a thing of the past, just a few dropped words here and.

PG-13

I just realized the extreme swings my last four movies represent. I’ve been swinging from one end of the spectrum to the other. I guess they all average out to be PG-13? R, G, NC-17, G

Toy Story 2

Well since we liked Toy Story so much, we figured we shouldn’t wait ten years to see Toy Story 2. It didn’t dissappoint. Did I mention Lauren does a mean impression of the ” Claw Worshipers ” ?

Bad Santa

Wow this is not your usual Christmas Movie. Billy Bob is certainly a fine actor. Well for God’s sake I hope he’s acting – I wonder what Angelina would have to say about that. Just below the surface is a caper flick, way below and I mean way below is a man (Thorton) that by the end of the movie finally finds some purpose in life and his first break in life after beating up a teenage bully. But proudly floating on the surface LOUD and PROUD is the most foul mouthed selfish individual to walk the earth, our ZERO a department store Santa. I can’t recall a liveaction movie that has more f-words than this one ( Team America might have had more ). Santa can’t string two sentences together without uttering some vulgarity or obscenity and these are dished out to children and adults with equal passion. I’d think this verbal abuse (while scripted) would violate some child actor union clause. Anyway If you can tolerate gutter filth the movie has plenty of low brow moments, right after watching it I was thinking it was okay definitely worth renting if this is your cup of tea, but after checking out the reviews and some of peoples favorite lines I have to say that I’ve warmed up to the movie a bit more. I wouldn’t buy it or rent again but I certainly would watch it again if the opportunity arose and I was in the mood for a refresher course on how to swear like a sailor.
